My first job in Switzerland
You’re starting work. Every month, part of your salary is deducted before it reaches your account. You might as well understand what it’s for.

What to check
- Your payslip. Each line has a purpose: AVS/AI/APG (1st pillar: state pension, disability insurance and income compensation), AC (unemployment insurance), LPP (occupational pension, 2nd pillar), LAA (accident insurance, here for non-occupational accidents) and, where applicable, tax at source.
- Your occupational pension (LPP). Your employer contributes to the 2nd pillar alongside you. Ask for your pension certificate and read it.
- Your health insurance. If you haven’t done so yet, choose your health insurer. Compare the models and adjust your deductible to your actual costs.
- The third pillar. You can open a pillar 3a (private pension savings) from your first salary. Payments reduce your taxable income.
- Your taxes. Even if you are taxed at source, you can sometimes claim deductions. Keep your receipts.
- Personal liability and household contents insurance. Two simple policies that protect you day to day.
Common mistakes
- Never reading your payslip in detail, and finding a mistake too late.
- Putting off the third pillar “until later”. Every year without a payment is a year of savings lost.
- Keeping the lowest deductible out of habit when you hardly ever see a doctor.
What I do for you
We go through your payslip, your insurance and your pension. I explain each line, and you make informed decisions from the start.
Frequently asked questions
From what salary do you contribute to the 2nd pillar?
As soon as your annual salary exceeds the entry threshold set by law (LPP). Below it, your employer is not required to insure you. Your pension certificate tells you.
How much can I pay into the third pillar?
In 2026, up to CHF 7,258 if you belong to a pension fund. The ceiling is adjusted periodically by the Confederation: CHF 7,373 from 2027.
I’m taxed at source. Can I deduct my third pillar?
Yes, by requesting a subsequent ordinary assessment by 31 March of the following year. Above a certain income, it is compulsory. The Vaud tax administration can tell you the conditions.
In collaboration with Callenium GmbH, a non-tied insurance intermediary.
