Three dates before the end of the year

  1. Send your letter by then

By registered post or A-Plus mail, so you keep proof. That is the FOPH’s advice. The 15th falls on a Sunday.

  2. Your insurer must have received it

To switch health insurer or lower your deductible, what counts is the date of receipt, not the postmark.

  3. Raising your deductible

Last day to notify your current insurer in writing of a higher deductible.

Basic insurance: the same everywhere

The LAMal (the law on compulsory basic health insurance) requires every health insurer to provide the same basic benefits. Only the price changes. Two people with the same deductible, in the same municipality, can pay different premiums for identical cover.

Supplementary insurance: what basic cover leaves out

Private or semi-private hospital wards, dental care, alternative medicine: supplementary insurance fills the gaps that basic cover leaves. It is not compulsory. The insurer can turn down an application depending on your health: think about this before cancelling.

The levers

  • The deductible (the amount you pay yourself each year before your insurer pays): the higher it is, the lower the premium. The right choice depends on your actual costs.
  • The model: family doctor, telemedicine or care network (HMO) model. You accept a set first point of contact in exchange for a lower premium.
  • The choice of health insurer: basic benefits are the same everywhere. Comparing every year takes little time.

What I do

I compare your situation across several health insurers and show you what you really pay. Deductible, model, supplementary insurance: you receive a written recommendation, and you decide.
